Drum Lesson #10

       16 th notes can be inserted into a drum beat to provide a different texture.  Without going into all the possibilities, this lesson will just provide a few examples of the basic's.  First we are going to play the hi hat with one hand and the snare drum with the other hand.  We are also going to remember how 16th notes can be grouped as 1 E + A , 2 E + A , 3 E + A , 4 E + A.  ( Pronounced as :
One EE And Ah,  Two EE And Ah,  Three EE And Ah, Four EE And Ah. )  On the Hi Hat we will be playing straight 8th notes.  Those will be counted as 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + ( Pronounced as One And Two And Three And Four And.)  When you see the + pronounce this as "and." 
 
     On 1 hit the hi hat and bass drum together.  On the + of one just hit the hi hat.  On 2 hit the hi hat and snare drum together.  On the + of two just hit the hi hat.  On the 3 hit the hi hat and bass drum together.  On the + of three just hit the hi hat.  On 4 hit the hi hat and snare drum together.  On the + of four just hit the hi hat.  The second time around we will be inserting a 16th note on the snare drum.  On 1 hit the hi hat and bass drum.  On the + of one hit the hi hat.  On the 2 hit the hi hat and the snare drum.  On the + of two just hit the hi hat. On the 3 hit the hi hat and bass drum together.  On the + of three just hit the hi hat.  On 4 hit the hi hat and snare drum together.  On the + of four just hit the hi hat.  This is where we will be inserting the 16th note snare.  After + comes A (pronounced as Ah.)  On the A hit the snare drum.  Then come right back, without missing a beat, on the 1 with the hi hat and bass drum starting off the measure to repeat it.  This is a little tricky so break it down.  Without thinking hit your hi hat.  Then hit your snare with the opposite hand.  Then hit the Hi Hat and Bass Drum together. Put them together: Hi Hat, Snare, Hi hat and bass drum together. 
 
 
     Next exercise.  On the 1 hit your Hi hat and bass drum together.  On the + of one hit your hi hat and bass drum together.  On 2 hit your hi hat and snare drum together.  On the + of two just hit your hi hat.  On 3 hit your hi hat and bass drum together.  On the + of three hit the hi hat and bass drum together.  On 4 hit the hi hat and snare together.  On the + of four just hit the hi hat.  On the A of four hit the 16th note snare.  Then go right back at the start of the measure, without missing a beat.
 
 
     Next exercise.  On the 1 hit your hi hat and bass drum together.  On the + of one hit your hi hat and bass drum together.  On 2 hit your hi hat and snare drum together.  On the + of two just hit your hi hat.  On the A of two hit a 16th note snare drum.  On 3 hit your hi hat and bass drum together.  On 4 hit the hi hat and snare drum together.  On the + of 4 just hit the Hi hat.  On the A of 4 hit the 16th note snare.  Then go right back in to start the entire measure over without hesitation.
 
     Next exercise will incorporate a 16th note played on the e of certain 16th note groupings starting after the 3.  On 1 hit the hi hat and bass drum together.  On the + of one hit the hi hat and bass drum together.  On the 2 hit the hi hat and snare drum together.  On the + of two hit the hi hat.  On 3 hit the hi hat and bass drum together.  On the E (Pronounced Ee ) hit a 16th note snare drum.  On the + of three hit the hi hat and bass drum together.  Then go to the 4 with the hi hat and snare drum coming in together.  On the + of four hit the hi hat.  On the A of four hit a 16th note on the snare.  Then go right into the hi hat and bass drum on the 1 at the start of the measure and start over.  Don't play anything on the A ( Ah ) of 3, and you don't even have to count it.
 
    There are a lot more complex combinations to mix and match.  Just break it down when you hear another drummer performing them by making sure to count.
